“Escape from Planet Earth” is a great, feel-good family movie that will appeal to every member of the family. The fast pace of Planet Baab’s super hero Scorch (Brendan Fraser), brightly colored alien characters and the loud adventurous sounds of alien ships taking off will keep the interest of the toddler-aged crowd. While middle-aged kids will appreciate the battle fighting story of a hilarious celebrity-like hero Scorch and the rift he has with his cautious, genius BASA engineer brother Gary (Rob Corddry) as they both venture (separately) to the “Dark Planet”, aka Planet Earth, and get captured by a secret military prison cleverly disguised as a “51 flavors” ice cream factory. Parents and Grandparents will value the message of strong family bonds and always working together through problems as Gary quickly goes after to save his captured brother. The impressive celebrity cast will keep adults entertained with sly humor and remind us of our funny, Earthly ways.
While the movie has a very light and fun feel to it, there are two potential deal breakers for kids who are easily startled. Firstly, there is a large alien who is imprisoned with Scorch and Gary that could be scary to some as she struggles with some anger management problems. Secondly, as with all movies, the villain can also be scary with his evil intentions and destructive schemes.
Overall, I would give this movie two thumbs up and recommend it for your next family movie night.
