Kamber Petty, NOVA Outdoors
I met Kamber, a real estate agent and blog author, at a Mission Sleep fundraiser last February. Since then, I have used her site many times to find out about area parks and playgrounds. Kamber inspires me to get out of my playground rut (going to the same three places all the time) and try something new. Her site is a valuable resource for Northern Virginia families, and I know you’ll love it as much as I do! Read more about Kamber and NOVA Outdoors in my interview below:
1. Why did you start the site “NOVA Outdoors?”
Nova Outdoors formerly known as “The Next Best Thing“ came about while a couple good friends, Suzi, Sarah and I sat around a sandbox with our children. We were talking about how great the Northern VA parks were around the area and how lucky our children are to have such nice places to interact with other kids and burn off all that extra energy. Suzi had made a comment about how it would be great if I started a website where all the parks were reviewed and included photos. Since all three of us are from different states, WV, OH and CA we all agreed it would be a nice resource for new families moving to the area. In addition to a great resource it allows me to get to know neighborhoods for my real estate clients. I can’t tell you how many times I have referenced a park when talking with clients about potential neighborhoods.
2. What do your kids think about doing park/playground reviews?
My oldest Cooper loves to review new parks. If it’s a nice day outside he asks to go to a “new park” and then once we get back in the car he lets me know what he thinks. It has gotten so serious that when we were visiting my Mom in California Cooper was asking to go to “new parks” and wanted me to take pictures of the equipment and sign. Then he asked me to put them up on my “log”…..haha!
3. Tell us some of your favorite outdoor places to visit in NoVA with your family?
Growing up in California I did a lot of hiking up in the mountains and once I moved to Virginia I found lots of great places to hike around. Now that we have the boys, my husband and I like to frequent Riverbend Park, Great Falls Park, and the Shenandoah National Forest. My kids love to see the local wildlife and have even come to know different animal tracks.
4. Do you have any plans for the future of your website?
Right now I’m having so much fun working on the website that I haven’t thought much into the future. I may in the future put up some great local mom run small business ads. I think the women that stay home and choose to be creative for their children and for themselves is awesome. But currently I hope families continue to use the website as a source and pass it along to other families.
